What’s It Like To Be An Intern At VTO?
Q&A w/ Voice Talent Online's Interns
About a month ago, Voice Talent Online gained two new interns: Lisa Tiné and Agnès Lebeau. Both in their final years at the University of Kent Canterbury campus, we asked them both 5 questions to get to know them better and to share their experience with Voice Talent Online!
Lisa Tiné – Production Intern
What degree are you studying?
My degree is the Film BA (Hons) at the University of Kent.
Why did you pick Voice Talent Online?
I picked Voice Talent Online as I have always focused my work on cameras and neglected sound which is also an area that I am interested in. I thought that doing an internship at a growing voice-over company such as VTO would be the best environment to learn audio recording and editing, and it was.
What was the most fun task you had at VTO?
There are two tasks that I really enjoyed. One was anything related to audio editing. As editing voiceovers was something that I had never done before joining VTO, I really enjoyed trying my hand at it and developing my skills at the same time. The second was preparing the studio for the podcast. It was very interesting to see how studio operations work in an audio-recording context and to learn about the best ways to record sound.
What was a challenge you faced during your internship and how did you overcome it?
The challenge that I faced during the internship was learning how to communicate and negotiate well with people through emails. I am not a big negotiator so in the beginning it was a bit hard for me. However, with practice, trial, and error, I developed a very useful skill that I am confident in using now.
What is a piece of advice you would give to prospect interns?
A piece of advice that I would give to future interns would be simply to be confident in your abilities. When listening out for problems in audio, I am still sometimes not sure what the root of an issue is. But everything always works out well when I go with my gut instinct and, if necessary, seek a team member for advice.
If you could sum up your internship experience in one word, what would it be?
One word that I would use to describe my experience is: enriching.
Agnès Lebeau – Digital Marketing Intern
What degree are you studying?
I will be graduating with a Bachelor in Media Studies in July!
Why did you pick Voice Talent Online?
I have some small experience with amateur voice acting so I was naturally curious at VTO. I also wanted to step out of my marketing comfort zone as I’m used to being in the food industry but not in the voice over industry.
What was the most fun task you had at VTO?
I recently filmed an intro and outro of myself for a social media campaign and while it was nerve-wracking, I had so much fun tinkering around with the teleprompter! I never used anything like that and it was so cool.
What was a challenge you faced during your internship and how did you overcome it?
I did not remember Photoshop as well I thought I did so having to re-learn that was a bit disorienting. After looking up some small guides and asking for help, however, it was such a breeze and I’ve never been more confident.
What is a piece of advice you would give to prospect interns?
Don’t be afraid to share your ideas but don’t be discouraged if they aren’t accepted. Internships are all about learning what works and does not work, and there’s no better way to learn that through mistakes!
If you could sum up your internship experience in one word, what would it be?
Illuminating!
[Update: A few weeks after this interview, Agnes accepted an offer of employment at VTO].
